12 people die in Elmina-Komenda highway accident

Twelve people have been reported dead in an accident at Eduagyei on the Elmina-Komenda junction in the Central Region.

The deceased include 5 females and 7 males, and one another person incurred severe injuries.

Police reports show that the accident happened when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number WR 1347-17, collided head-on with a DAF Truck with registration number GM 2570-12.

The bodies have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

According to Joy News, an eyewitness stated the DAF truck was loaded with bags of cement heading to Takoradi while the Toyota Hiace bus was heading to Kumasi from Takoradi.

The accident happened when the trailer, allegedly overtook a vehicle ahead of it in poor visibility caused by the smoke from burning bush, and run into the Toyota Hiace bus.

The whereabouts of the DAF Truck’s driver is yet to be known.

The Ghana National Fire Service report that their rescue team was quickly dispatched immediately after receiving the distress call at 15:50hrs from a Police Officer.
