China has gifted Zimbabwe with a new modern Parliament building to replace the old one which was built during the colonial era. The new Parliament building cost $160 million and China has covered the entire cost. Zimbabwean and Chinese flags are displayed on the building.
The new Parliament sits on 33,000 square meters and comprises a six-storey office complex and four-storey building, which houses the National Assembly and the Senate. The National Assembly can accommodate 400 people while the Senate building has 150 seats. The building has other rooms including 600 rooms for Members of Parliament and employees, 15 rooms for committee, car parks, staff office space, and many others.
Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) has been in charge of this construction in the last 42 months, fully funded by Chinese government. The SCG Project Manager, Cai Libo, said;
There will be no doubt that the new Parliament building will become a landmark building in Zimbabwe and even in the whole of Southern Africa. The project strongly supports democracy in Zimbabwe while boosting the country’s image. This building is a landmark in Zimbabwe.
This is a show of a solid friendship between China and Zimbabwe.
