Residents of Madina, in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, paraded two young men suspected to be goat thieves in the streets with the booty on their head.
The suspects were booed at and shamed by the residents in the streets before handing them over to the police.
The two suspects, Yakubu Mohammed, 21, and Rashid Alhassan, 26, were forced to march from one street to another, to serve as a deterrent to other people in this community.
The Zongo Youth Chief, Alidu Suraj Musah, led the residents to arrest the suspects despite the pleas for mercy from the two young men.
The residents said they have had enough of such crimes in their community, hence it was time to deal with the thieves.
The Zongo Youth Chief reported that they subjected the suspects to extra-judicial treatment before handing them over to police to avoid possible lynching by the furious residents.
The chief further said they are organizing watchdog groups to ensure no lynching of suspects without trial. All suspected criminals will be handed over to police for the right investigations.
Nkwanta Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Lawrence Wiafe, confirmed the suspects have been put before the District Court.
