New Patriotic Party (NPP) Obuasi West Member of Parliament, Kweku Kwarteng, has made it clear that e-levy cannot be scrapped despite the government going to IMF for support. According to this NPP MP, some Ghanaians seem ignorant and clueless on understanding how economy works. He believes such people are the ones calling for scrapping of e-levy.

Mr. Kweku further said that e-levy was never an alternative to the IMF.

Sharing his statement when speaking on Citi FM;

I’ve heard people make comments as though the pain of E-levy can be escaped if you go for an IMF programme. The IMF is going to come and start discussions. When they come to your country, they do not come and tell you to relax taxes. In fact, they will probably come and say e-levy is not enough. When IMF comes to your economy, the records show they will say don’t employ people, cut your expenditures and increase your revenue so you may have to take on more revenue measures.

Mr. Kweku’s statement came after the announcement from the Ministry of Information that President Akufo-Addo had approved the government to begin engagements with the IMF.
