President Akufo-Addo’s tenure as ECOWAS Chairman ends

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure a the ECOWAS Chairman ended yesterday on July 3, 2022, and the group is set to elect a new Chairman. President Akufo has served in ECOWAS as Chairman for two consecutive terms and this has come to an end after African leaders met yesterday, July 4, 2022, in Accra Ghana.

President Akufo, while speaking in the opening of the African leaders summit in Accra, praised himself for the good service he offered throughout his tenure as ECOWAS Chairman. According to Akufo-Addo, he excellently served the region despite many challenges. He also expressed his appreciation to sub-regional leaders for their cooperation and support during his tenure. The President promised to continuously support ECOWAS even after his exit as the group’s chairman.

Sharing his statement;

I will at the end of this summit conclude my tenure as chairman of this authority. It has been a great privilege for Ghana and myself to have been given the opportunity by you to serve this noble organization for two consecutive terms, particularly at one of the most trying periods of its history. I have benefited tremendously from the solidarity of your excellencies in the discharge of this difficult mandate which you have conferred on me, for which I am very grateful. I will continue to play my full part to the best of my ability in the work of the authority.
