Senegalese football player Sadio Mane has stood firm in his Muslim beliefs by refusing to hold a glass of beer in Bayern Munich’s sponsored team photo.
The team photo was for the celebration of the partnership with Munich-based brewery Paulaner where Bayern Munich released pictures from the shoot.
The photo featured all 31 members of the Bayern Munich first team wearing traditional German outfits called Lederhosen.
Out of 31 members in the photoshoot, only two people were not holding a tall glass of Paulaner beer.
Sadio Mane was notably not holding the glass of beer.
Sadio refused to hold the glass of beer as a way of openly practising Muslim values that forbid consumption or any form of association with alcohol of any form.
The other player who refused to hold the glass of beer is also a Muslim from Morroco, defender Noussair Mazraoui.
Paulaner is a German brewery, established in 1634 in Munich and is one of the six breweries that provide beer for Oktoberfest, which is an annual German celebration in which Bayern are heavily involved.
Such a photoshoot is one of the ways the two institutions, Bayern and Paulaner, celebrate their alliance.
