Ghanaian teachers continue to lament over the economic hardships they are facing currently leading to strike. Due to inadequate pay, teachers admit the situation has forced them to become liars at home to avoid providing for their families.

Isaac Baah, in charge of GNAT’s pay and conditions, has said that teachers are tired of making up reasons to avoid their responsibilities as providers at home. According to Baah, most the teachers are fathers and husbands, hence much is expected of them as breadwinners.

Look at teachers; to run from providing daily chop money to their wives, they wait for their wives to enter the bathroom then they will run out from the house. Some also have to let their family go back to their villages, so it’s a serious situation and if the government doesn’t pay the 20 %, it wouldn’t be easy.

Teachers declared a nationwide strike on Monday, July 4, over cost of living allowance (COLA). Nurses and mid-wives are also threatening to follow suit for the same reason. So far it is not clear how the government will handle COLA issue considering the current economic position of the country.
